Stalingrad characters ¿ 105 At Stalingrad Stalingrad is an abridged edition of the five volume Stalingrad Trilogy. StalingradThe single volume Stalingrad by David Glantz and Johnathan House leaves this reader both sated and frustrated The work unfolds over four hundred and ninety eight pages and includes 104 maps and is followed by 61 pages of notes which are sorted by the books twenty chapters An eleven page bibliography then precedes a comprehensive index Glantz and House present a thorough addition to the volumes of prior books that cover the Battle of StalingradStalingrad by Glantz and House provide a prelude to the title battle with a synopsis of what happened in Russia from the onset of Barbarossa up to the movement of German formations in Operation Blau the march toward Stalingrad and the movement of German and allied troops into the Caucasus toward the coveted oil fields Philosophies of both German and Russian strategies provide the reader with the ability to appreciate the German tendency to underestimate their opponent and the Russian impulsivity toward ill planned counter attacks and inability to coordinate combined arms yet as the week s wore on the Soviets were learning which culminated in the November 19 counter offensiveGlantz and House do provide the reader with insight that the German forces had neither the euipment nor manpower to achieve both goals of Operation Blau They are painstaking with the information provided that the Germans were being bled white were overextended and were headed for disaster as the advancing 6th Army was continually robbing its flanks for men and euipment to throw into the meat grinder called StalingradContrary to most other histories of this campaign Glantz and House are rather complimentary of the efforts put forth by the Romanian troops Perhaps the manpower was there but the Romanians did not have the necessary defensive euipment to stand up to the soviet ard assaults The authors also document where Soviet spearheads were blunted when they ran into prepared German formations and leave the reader with the hint of an impression that if the 6th Army s flanks had not been robbed the results of the Russian offensive may have been different The authors also provide in detail the liuidation of the 6th Army It s rather ironic that as the 6th army was compressed by Soviet forces they defended the same field of battle as the Soviet 62 army and other forces the Germans tried so desperately to defeat Cutoff from the reuired supply of weapons euipment food and manpower that allowed Soviet forces to withstand the 6th Army the German forces faced annihilationThe book s strengths are in large part its weaknesses The availability of SovietRussian archives provide a perspective upon the battle that one can now say is eual and balanced when combined with the German histories However one becomes lost amid the many different Soviet formations in particular in regard to flank coverage of the major units The maps provided add to the confusion as units are not listed or cannot be found as well as many of the towns rivers hills etc that would prove beneficial to the reader in regard to when and where units are moving and contacting their foes Of the 104 maps provided many fall far short of illustrating the phases of the battle nor add to the reader s ability to digest what transpires during the time period covered in the books pagesAs confusing as is some of the text and certainly the maps Glantz and House provide wonderful insight into the strategies and philosophies of both sides as introductions to each phase of the battle They also provide spot on conclusions at the end of each chapterbattle phase The last paragraph of Glantz and House s Stalingrad is simple but brilliant in summary There remains the uestion of Stalingrad s place in the Soviet German conflict the extent to which it was in fact a turning point in the war The failure of Operation Barbarossa at the end of 1941 had already demonstrated that Germany could not win a short war based on blitzkrieg The failure of Operation Blau a year later including the grievous loss of Sixth Army established that Germany could not win on any terms Six moths after that the Battle of Kursk dictated that Germany s ultimate defeat would be total
