Fire in the City: Savonarola and the Struggle for the Soul of Renaissance Florence characters ã eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF Download º eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF » Lauro Martines Century Florence The Dominican friar has long been portrayed as a dour puritanical demagogue who urged his followers to burn their worldly goods in the bonfire of the vanities But as Martines shows this is a caricature of the truth the version propagated by the wealthy and powerful who feared the political reforms he represented Here Savonarola emerges as a complex and subtle man both a religious and a civic leader who inspired an outpouring of political debate in a city newly freed from the tyranny. This work is primarily about Florentine politics from 1480 to 1499 rather than Savonarola and his religious ideas and impact in Florence Although there is much material included to acuaint general readers with Florence during the Renaissance the Papacy and Savonarola s pre Protestant ideas on Church reform the book really reuires the reader have substantial knowledge in these areas to be able to glean the meat of this work and put everything into context That being said what the book covers is covered well Unfortunately the author jumps around in time when covering the various subjects and continuity is definitely a problem The reader must proceed carefully and keep many things in mind to form an adeuate mosaic and that is what reuires substantial knowledge beforehand The main character is of course Savonarola and author Martines does a fine job in briefly covering his life before Florence and his actions and theology while there Many readers may be disappointed that there is not concerning Savonarola s theology but that would be another book There is sufficient theology for the reader to understand the radical impact in Florence maybe even exactly the right amount Although I believe the reviews on the back cover and inside the front are overblown the prose does add theater and even suspense to the story In short I recommend this work to any person interested in the Renaissance the uasi democratic institutions of the time or the Roman Catholic Church s problems that brought about the Protestant Reformation No doubt many readers will be interested sufficiently to read further on Savonarola a remarkable figure in Christian history when religion and politics were inseparable There are even lessons here for modern times

Fire in the City: Savonarola and the Struggle for the Soul of Renaissance Florence characters ã eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF Download º eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF » Lauro Martines Of the Medici In the end the volatile passions he unleashed and the powerful families he threatened sent the friar to his own fiery death But the fusion of morality and politics that he represented would leave a lasting mark on Renaissance Florence For the many readers fascinated by histories of Renaissance Italy such as Brunelleschi's Dome or Galileo's Daughter and Martines's acclaimed April Blood Fire in the City offers a vivid portrait of one of the most memorable characters from that dazzling era. Lauro Martines develops this history of Florence and Savonarola with wonderfully lucid logic both of fact and time and place It is incredibly readable and develops a sense of having been on the streets in the times Absolutely brilliantly researched and presented I wanted to know about the man Savonarola the man of high ideals and to learn how it could be that his life ended so ingloriously I was totally satisfied with this book and I recommend it highly Some of the facts shocked me to the point of having to close the book for a moment but LM took great care to avoid sensationalism and the shock factor was in the fact itself
