PDF/EPUB Ajax, The Dutch, The War – learntopark.co.za Free In Simon Kuper's book he covers how football intertwines with WWII. The book covers several football clubs within the Netherlands during the world war two era. He does provide some in depth information about Ajax Amsterdam, but not exclusively to this one club. Overall, very interesting read from an author that produces novels mixing politica

PDF/EPUB Ajax, The Dutch, The War – learntopark.co.za Free The link to football is minimal. This book focuses much on the Dutch, the war, and the treatment of Jews than it does on football or Ajax. More importantly, it's just not that interesting.

review Ajax, The Dutch, The War learntopark.co.za à 9 read download Ò E-book, or Kindle E-pub à learntopark.co.za There were some parts of this book I found quite fascinating. Overall though, it did not live up to the quality of two other books I read by Simon Kuper; Soccer Against the Enemy, and Soccernomics.

Kuper came across as very ethnocentric in some parts of the book. Obviously, the suffering of the holocaust

The author has an agenda but he is aiming at certain truths which may be selective history. It is even misleading that it is not actually titled "Ajax, the Dutch, the War and the Jews" because that i

PDF/EPUB Ajax, The Dutch, The War – learntopark.co.za Free Simon Kuper has written another gem, this time about a little known and less understood period of football history.
It is an intriguing book, bristling with tales of the unexpected and the unknown, and shatters several commonly held myths

It doesn't have one cloear cut theme, but rather merges many of them: Dutch football, Israeli football, the Holocaust, contemporary politics, international football. The overall result is a great and highly informative read.

review Ajax, The Dutch, The War

Ajax, The Dutch, The War free read ´ 9 TCH THE WAR he skilfully pieces together an alternative account of World War II He looks at the lives of the footballers who played for the Dutch club the officials and the ordinary fans during this tumultuous period and challenges the accepted notion of the War in occupied Europe With almost 80 per cent of Amsterdam's Jewish Corner wiped out during the war th. I must agree using Ajax is a way to examine the role of the Netherlands in World War II and for the most part it is not flattering The author has an agenda but he is aiming at certain truths which may be selective history It is even misleading that it is not actually titled Ajax the Dutch the War and the Jews because that is what this is about and not neccessarily in that order Among the evil and gross wrong of war there are some heroic episodes involving the Dutch against the Nazi war machine A lot of detail gives us much of the ambience of those days Still the Dutch as a people and as to whether they were victimized by the Nazi war machine is very much a minor issue with the author along with any other ethnic group feeling that wrath However the author does play on the fact that teams like Ajax like Tottenham in England are perceived to have ties with the Jewish peopleChapter 11 Soldier Heroes British and German football in the war is exciting per World War II buffs especially the travails of some of the German National players such as Alex Sing You will read of how German soccer teams in Paris even were attacked by Partisans while practicingAjax is truly a most legendary name in international club soccer with their development of total football a team built on style and finesse and not monetary ones via most of the biggest clubs in Europe Ajax the club itself was largely heroic during World War II versus say the Netherlands as a whole in Kuper s research

Ajax, The Dutch, The War free read ´ 9 E long held belief that by and large half the Dutch population had some kind of link to the Resistance has of late come into uestion Kuper explores this issue and looks deeper into the role of football across Europe in the years both preceding and following the War The result is a compelling and controversial account of the War seen through the lens of footbal. Simon Kuper has written extensively on football He was brought up in the Netherlands Originally published in Dutch this revised edition appeared in 2011 The title is somewhat awkward so is the book He has the three subjects of the title but he does not really marry them together The subtitle is inaccurateFirst there is Ajax The club had strong Jewish support before 1939 In the 1950s and 1960s it was built into a world class club with the aid of Jewish money players and a famous physiotherapist In recent times its fans have attached themselves to the Israeli national flag It is very popular in Israel Yet the club rejects its Jewish links There is no memorial in the Arena to those of its members who died in the camps Simon Kuper tries to make sense of these apparent contradictions but is dragged away by the other two elements in the bookThen there is Holland He does not disguise a certain dislike for a country that represents itself as a haven of tolerance whereas the facts tell a different tale Over 80% of Dutch Jews died in the camps Dutch gentiles as it were did not do much to stop the deportations The ball rolled on as he writes uoting an earlier scholar Mendacious Amsterdam has made dishonest use of Anne Frank to cover its sins Anti Semitism was appearing on the terraces in the 1980s A general hostility to immigrants is now well established in Dutch politicsFinally central to the history of both Ajax and Holland is the war However the author spends as much time on the experience of France Britain and Germany The best part of the book is actually a section on Sparta Rotterdam during the occupation This is based on the author s discovery of a treasure trove in its archives But it is not Ajax as promised in the titleHe interviewed some fascinating old timers many now dead He did a lot of background reading He accessed two important unpublished doctoral theses He knows his sport He cares about injustice He is angry about the fate of Holland s Jews There are some startling revelations in 1945 one Dutch club was found to be using prayer shawls to mark its corner flags their owners were already turned to ash in AuschwitzUltimately the book lacks tightness and coherence I suspect he did not find enough for what he wanted to be his main theme Ajax 1940 1945 Eually he could not drop other material he did come across fascinating but not really directly linked to Ajax 1940 45 It is still a good read take it chapter by chapter
